Dear Cardinal Students, Families, and Supporters!

District Leadership and our district teacher’s union reached a tentative agreement on what instruction will look like and what safety measures will be implemented if we return to on-site learning the week of April 12.  As a reminder, students will have the option to return to on-site learning if three indicators are met: 1) all school staff have access to both doses of vaccinations, 2) SD County is in the red tier, and 3) strict safety mitigation measures are in place at every school site.

I want to make you aware of “next steps” and provide you with “need-to-know” information as of this moment.  District will be emailing you a DIFFERENT survey (hopefully this week) to identify if you’d like your student(s) to participate in on-campus learning OR continue will full-time online learning.  It is CRITICAL that you complete this survey when it’s eventually sent to you.  One significant area that is still not clearly defined in the agreement is how many days each student will have the opportunity to learn on site.  Essentially, school sites are being asked to collect all survey responses and then make a determination if sites can offer two days of on-site learning for each student or four days of on-site learning for each student.  I anticipate that Hoover on-site learning will consist of offering two days of in-person learning a week for each student.  I make this prediction because our class size capacity will likely be approximately 12 students at six feet apart.  To ensure each class only has 12 students at one time, we will need to create two separate cohorts of students. One cohort will come to campus two consecutive days of the week and the other cohort will come to campus the other two consecutive days of the week.  While I acknowledge you may have more questions at this time, I provide you with this preliminary information so you have an idea of what you are committing to when you complete the District survey. I also acknowledge that you likely have more questions (like which specific days your child may be on campus) and frankly, we are still seeking more answers together, but I want to be transparent with the information I have as of today.

Other important notes in the District Agreement:

  1. All desks in classrooms will be 6 feet apart.  All classrooms have been provided with air filtration or air purification systems that meet health guidelines.
  2. Student schedules and teachers WILL NOT change regardless of choice to learn on campus or continue with online learning.  Teachers will be teaching students in their classroom and students learning from home online simultaneously.
