Core services for families
- On-campus help: The Parent Center offers Monday immigration legal walk-ins through Jewish Family Service, Tuesday general legal advice with Spanish interpretation, and a monthly Students Without Limits session with an immigration attorney. The Hub provides free food after each Hoover Market.
- Immigration emergencies: It lists confidential ways to report ICE activity, obtain free consultation after a detention, access a one-time emergency grant of up to $200, and contact detention-resistance support.
- Basic needs: Families can locate nearby food banks online or use a service offering free food delivery, hygiene and baby supplies, and multilingual therapy without ID or immigration-status requirements.
- Transportation: Youth age 18 and under can ride buses and trolleys free with a Youth PRONTO card or app through June 2027; they should carry school ID.
Legal and detention resources
- The guide directs families to free or low-cost immigration support for DACA, citizenship, TPS, green cards, family petitions, asylum, humanitarian visas, and protections for crime survivors.
- It includes specialized support for Haitian Kreyòl speakers; Black African, Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian families; and people with immigration cases at Otay Mesa or San Diego court.
- For a detained loved one or court date, it provides the ICE detainee locator, detention-center phone numbers, and the 24/7 immigration court-status line, which requires a 9-digit A-number.
- It also links to know-your-rights cards, a family emergency-planning app, Hoover’s expanded resource list, and multilingual safety information.
School rights and family planning
- Access and privacy: Every child may attend California public school free regardless of immigration status.Schools do not need immigration status or a Social Security number for enrollment, and families can decline sharing directory information.
- Meals and safety: A Social Security number is not required for free school meals. Students have the right to be free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination based on nationality or immigration status, and complaints can be filed.
- Preparedness: Families should keep emergency contacts current, name a trusted backup adult for pickup, and make a family safety plan. A Caregiver’s Authorization Affidavit may allow qualifying relatives to enroll a child and approve school medical care.
